UNIST and University of Oulu Explore Expanded Collaboration in Future Technologies

On May 7, UNIST welcomed a delegation from the University of Oulu for discussions on expanding collaboration in a range of emerging technology fields. Organized by UNIST's Office of Research Affairs, the visit brought together university leaders, researchers, and international cooperation officials from both institutions for meetings, laboratory tours, and thematic seminars on the UNIST campus.

The delegation from the University of Oulu included President Arto Maaninen, researchers in engineering, materials science, hydrogen technologies, digital health, quantum computing, and software engineering, as well as representatives from the Embassy of Finland in Korea. UNIST participants included President Chong Rae Park, Dean KwanMyung Kim for Research Affairs, Dean Young-Bin Park for Public Relations and International Affairs, and faculty members from related research fields.

Researchers from both universities participated in networking sessions and parallel seminars covering hydrogen and green steel, digital health, materials and mechanical engineering, software engineering, and quantum computing.

Discussions focused on opportunities for joint research, researcher exchange, and long-term institutional cooperation. Participants explored potential collaboration in carbon-neutral industrial technologies, AI-driven software systems, healthcare and biomedical data applications, advanced materials, and quantum technologies. The two institutions also discussed possible future cooperation related to Arctic shipping routes and broader international research initiatives.

Founded in 1958, the University of Oulu is one of Finland’s leading research universities, recognized for strengths in engineering, ICT, materials science, hydrogen technologies, and digital innovation, including advanced research in 6G communications.

“This visit provided a valuable opportunity for both institutions to better understand each other’s research capabilities and identify concrete areas for future collaboration,” said UNIST President Chong Rae Park. “We look forward to deepening cooperation in key future technologies and expanding global academic partnerships through sustained exchange.”

UNIST plans to continue strengthening strategic partnerships with leading European research universities while expanding its global collaborative network in emerging science and technology fields.
