Choi’s Battery Twin Lab

  • Our laboratory conducts research on battery application and operation technologies across the entire battery life cycle, with the goal of ensuring safe operation during use. In particular, we focus on accurately diagnosing and classifying battery conditions, predicting the Remaining Useful Life (RUL), and establishing efficient management strategies for systems spanning the cell, module, and pack levels. A key objective of our research is to identify and define Battery Health Indicators (HI) that represent the internal state of the battery, and to develop diagnostic algorithms capable of quantitatively evaluating these indicators. Furthermore, based on a comprehensive understanding of battery degradation mechanisms, we develop RUL prediction methods that integrate empirical models with machine learning-based approaches. This enables the establishment of a value-assessment framework that supports safe operation during use and determines the optimal timing for battery replacement, repurposing, or recycling. We also investigate internal non-uniformities and thermo-electrical interactions, and develop control strategies to manage these effects. Ultimately, our goal is to implement a Battery Twin platform that integrates safety assessment and operational management throughout the battery life cycle, thereby contributing to the advancement of battery-based service models such as Battery as a Service (BaaS).
