박승배 교수 ‘이공계 학생을 위한 윤리학 개론서’ 출간

인문학부 박승배 교수가 윤리학 개론서 《Reflections upon Morality(도덕에 대한 성찰)》를 한국학술정보(주)에 출간했다. 이 책은 이공계 대학생을 주요 독자로 삼아 집필된 윤리학 입문서다. 책은 과학자들과 공학자들이 일상생활에서 부딪히는 윤리문제들을 다루고 있다. 대표적인 사례로는 △유전자 편집 기술의 정당성 △무인자동차의 도덕 규칙 설계 △부당한 지시에 대한 기술자의 대응 △AI의 전문직 대체 가능성 △살상용 로봇 개발의 윤리성 등이 있다. 이공계 학생들의 사회과학적 소양을 넓히기 위한 주제도 폭넓게 포함됐다. 언론의 편파 보도가 ‘언론의 자유’라는 이름으로 정당화될 수 있는지, 이를 넘어서는 독자의 역할은 무엇인지, 국제사회에서 강대국의 행위를 어떤 기준으로 평가해야 하는지, 약소국은 어떠한 전략으로 생존해야 하는지, 전쟁은 왜 발생하며 이를 피하기 위해 어떤 선택이 필요한지 등을 짚는다. 창업을 준비하는 학생들을 위한 논점도 눈에 띈다. 기업의 궁극적 목표가 이윤 추구인지 공익 실현인지, 기업 임원이 연봉 인상을 정당화할 수 있는 근거는 무엇인지, 명품 기업의 마케팅 전략은 도덕적인지, 일부 억만장자들이 검소한 생활을 유지하는 이유와 그들의 투자 방식은 무엇인지 등 현실적 질문을 던진다. 이와 함께 공리주의와 칸트주의 등 규범윤리학의 주요 이론을 소개하고, 낙태·사형제·안락사와 같은 전통적 윤리 쟁점도 다뤘다. 윤리학이 심리학·생물학과 맺는 학제 간 연관성도 함께 조명한다. 전면 영어로 집필된 점 역시 100% 영어 강의를 시행 중인 UNIST의 교육 방침과 맞닿아 있다. 박승배 교수는 “윤리 문제와 관련해서 이공계 대학생들의 인문학적 소양을 향상시킬 수 있는 최고의 기회를 제공할 것”이라고 말했다.

UNIST 신입생 영어캠프 성료, ‘글로벌 과학기술 인재’ 첫 담금질

UNIST 인문학부가 2026년 신입생을 대상으로 20일부터 30일까지 4박 5일간 영어캠프를 운영했다. 코로나19 이후 처음으로 전면 대면 방식으로 진행된 프로그램에는 예비 신입생들이 캠퍼스를 직접 찾아 영어 수업과 대학 생활을 함께 경험했다. 이번 캠프는 글로벌 과학기술 인재 양성을 목표로 신입생의 외국어 역량을 키우고, 영어 강의에 대한 적응력을 높이기 위해 기획됐다. 입학 직후 이어질 강의 환경을 미리 경험하도록 구성한 것이 특징이다. ‘2026년 신입생 영어캠프’ 참가자들이 오리엔테이션 안내사항을 주의 깊게 듣고 있다. 캠프에는 예비 신입생과 재학생 등 111명이 참여했다. 프로그램은 경영관을 중심으로 진행됐으며, 영어 학습과 체험 활동이 병행됐다. UNIST 원어민 교수진이 직접 수업에 참여해 교육을 이끌었다. '듣기·말하기'와 '읽기·쓰기' 영역을 중심으로 UNIST 강의에서 요구되는 기초 영어 사용 능력을 다뤘으며, 매일 오전 9시부터 6시까지 수업이 진행됐다. 이후 TA 보충과 활동 세션까지 저녁 8시에 종료되는 수업이 이어졌다. 코로나19 영향으로 2021년부터 온라인으로 운영되던 영어캠프는 학습 집중도와 소통 측면에서 한계가 있었다. 이에 UNIST는 교육 효과를 높이기 위해 2026년부터 캠퍼스 체류형 오프라인 캠프로 전환했다. 영어캠프에 참가한 신입생들이 선배 TA들과 'TA Led Activity Sessions'를 진행하고 있다. 선배 재학생과의 교류도 프로그램에 포함됐다. 학습조교 주도 활동 세션(TA Led Activity Sessions)을 통해 선배들이 학습 경험과 수업 준비 방법을 공유했고, 참가자들은 대학 생활에 대한 현실적인 조언을 들을 수 있었다. 이번 영어캠프를 수료한 학생들은 영어 수업 이수 자격 요건을 충족하게 된다. 캠프에 참여한 신입생들은 “처음 방문하는 캠퍼스에서 영어 학습에 집중하는 경험을 통해 입학 이후 영어 강의에 준비하는 계기가 됐다”고 만족감을 보였다. UNIST 언어교육 프로그램 코디네이터인 인문학부 김정연 교수는 캠프를 마친 소회로 “학생들이 즐겁고 성실하게 참여해 준 덕분에 캠프가 의미 있게 마무리될 수 있었다”며, “이번 경험이 영어 학습은 물론 대학 생활 전반에 대한 자신감으로 이어지길 바란다”고 말했다.

인문학부 박승배 교수, 과학·공학도 위한 종교철학 개론서 출간

인문학부 박승배 교수가 종교철학 개론서 《Reflections upon Religion》를 한국학술정보(주)에 2일 출간했다. 이 책은 기존 종교철학 개론서들과 달리 과학도와 공학도에 내용이 맞춰져 있다. 과학의 관점에서 종교철학의 주제들을 다루고 있다. 예를 들어, 육체가 죽은 후에 정신이 존재할 수 있는지 양자장 이론(quantum field theory)과 결부시켜 논의를 전개하고 있다. 신이 우주를 창조했는지 빅뱅 이론, 등각 순환 우주론(conform cyclic cosmology), 상대성이론, 열역학 제1법칙, 열역학 제2법칙에 비춰 검토하고 있다. 또한 인지과학의 관점에서 종교 현상들을 설명한다. 종교의 기원은 무엇인가? 종교적 환희는 어디에서 오는가? 종교인은 왜 전도에 진심인가? 종교적 의식(ritual)은 어떤 기능을 하는가? 종교는 도덕에 어떤 영향을 미치는가? 종교 전쟁은 왜 발생하는가? 이런 질문들에 인지과학자들이 어떻게 대답했고 타당한지 논의한다. 이 책은 박 교수가 메릴랜드대학교와 UNIST에서 종교철학 과목을 가르치면서 쌓은 경험을 토대로 집필됐다. UNIST는 100% 영어강의를 시행하고 있으며 토론식 수업을 장려하고 있다. 따라서 영어로 집필돼 있고, 토론식 수업에 걸맞은 주제들로 엄선돼 있다. 과학철학을 전공한 박승배 교수는 해외 SCI급 학술지에 80여 편의 논문을 게재했고, 2022년과 2025년에는 세계적인 학술전문 출판사 스프링거(Springer)에 전문서 《Embracing Scientific Realism》과 《Induction, Science, and Morality》를 출간했다. 국내 과학철학계에서는 최초이다.

박승배 교수 전문서 출간 ‘귀납, 과학과 도덕’

인문학부 박승배 교수가 세계적인 학술출판사 스프링어(Springer)에 《귀납, 과학과 도덕(Induction, Science, and Morality)》을 출간했다. 스프링어에 두 권의 과학철학 분야 전문서를 낸 한국인 연구자는 박 교수뿐이다. 이 책은 스프링어 철학 분야 편집장인 부에노(Bueno) 교수 초청으로 집필됐다. 박 교수는 이 책에서 귀납의 문제를 중심으로 과학철학적 논의를 전개했다. 귀납의 문제는 18세기 영국 철학자 흄(Hume)이 제기한 난제로, 귀납을 정당화할 수 없다는 주장을 말한다. 흄이 이 문제를 제기하는 데 귀납을 사용했다고 지적하며, 이에 대한 비판적 시각을 책에서 설명했다. 귀납의 문제는 지난 300년 동안 많은 철학자들이 해결을 시도했으나 여전히 풀리지 않은 주제다. 또, 메타윤리학에서 새로운 이론인 도덕적 기능론(Moral Functionalism)을 제시했다. 윤리학의 당위명제 본성에 대한 논의에 새로운 관점을 덧붙였다. 과학이 사실명제를 다루는 반면, 윤리학은 당위명제를 다룬다. 즉, 과학이 사실에 초점을 맞추지만, 윤리학은 ‘무엇을 해야 한다’는 당위성을 논한다. 이 책은 도덕적 기능론을 통해 당위명제의 근본적 성격을 밝히고자 했다. 박 교수는 2009년 UNIST에 임용된 이후, SCI급 학술지에 80여 편의 논문을 발표했으며, 2022년에는 그의 첫 번째 전문서인 《과학적 실재론 수용하기(Embracing Scientific Realism)》를 내놓았다. 그는 “UNIST에서 게재한 책과 논문을 해외 대학원생들이 인용해 박사학위를 받는 모습을 보면 연구자로서 보람을 느낀다”고 했다. 이어 “UNIST는 100% 영어강의를 진행하고 있어, 학생들과 영어로 토론할 때마다 연구에 대한 새로운 통찰을 얻는다”고 덧붙였다.

UNIST-가우디월드재단, ‘지속 가능 도시 개발' MOU 체결

인문학부는 15일 스페인 가우디월드재단(Gaudí World Foundation, GWF)과 공동으로 ‘과학-디자인 아이디어 국제 워크숍: 매력적인 해양도시 만들기’를 개최했다. 이번 워크숍에서는 다양한 학문 분야의 전문가와 학생들이 참석해 안토니 가우디의 자연 기반 디자인 접근법을 중점적으로 다뤘다. 행사는 김효민 교수의 환영사로 시작됐다. 이어 소피아 아브람척 가우디월드재단 크리에이티브 디렉터와 홍성욱 서울대 화학학과 교수가 기조연설을 했다. 아브람척 디렉터는 ‘가우디 방법론을 활용한 아이디어 발상’을, 홍 교수는 ‘과학기술과 예술의 융합’을 주제로 강연을 진행했다. 이들은 창의적 사고와 융합의 중요성을 강조했다. 워크숍에서는 안토니 가우디의 자연 기반 디자인 접근법을 중점적으로 다뤘다. 참가자들은 가우디의 '기원, 인본주의, 디자인 및 지속 가능성' 철학을 바탕으로 현대 도시 문제를 해결할 방안을 도출했다. 대표작 콜로니아 구엘을 통해 자연과 인간 중심의 디자인 융합 사례도 직접 경험했다. 특히 가우디의 디자인 원칙을 실습하며 생체모방과 ‘바이오애호증(Biophilia)’, 즉 인간이 자연과의 연결을 추구하는 특성을 반영한 디자인 접근법을 발전시켰다. 또한 AI 도구를 활용해 설계한 스케치를 시각화하며 최신 기술이 디자인에 어떻게 적용되는지 배울 수 있었다. 워크숍은 건축, 디자인, 과학기술 분야 간 협력을 촉진했다. 참가자들은 해양 도시 개발을 위한 아이디어를 발굴하고, 자연 친화적 디자인으로 문제 해결 능력을 향상할 수 있었다. 그 결과, 지속 가능한 도시 개발을 위한 실용적인 방안이 제시됐다. 협약식에는 박종래 총장, 박영빈 대외협력처장, 김영춘 학생처장, 김효민 인문학부 교수와 GWF 소피아 아브람척 디렉터, 문정서 팀장 등이 참석했다. 홍성욱 서울대 교수가 축사를 전했고, 카를로스 카날스 GWF 이사장은 화상회의로 참여했다. 워크숍 종료 후, UNIST와 GWF재단은 창의적 융합 교육과 연구를 위한 업무협약을 체결했다. 협약은 공동 연구개발과 산업체·지역사회와의 네트워킹 강화를 목표로 했다. 과학·기술·예술을 결합한 디자인솔루션 개발과 글로벌 교육 협력 증진을 위한 출발점이 된 것이다. 박종래 총장은 “과학과 예술을 융합함으로써 ‘파이오니어 UNIST’만의 교육 모델과 혁신적인 연구 성과를 창출할 것”이라며 “이번 협약은 첨단 과학기술뿐만 아니라 대학의 전환적 혁신 문화를 창발하는 데 의미가 있을 것”이라고 밝혔다. 한편 이번 워크숍은 UNIST 융합과학연구센터(CISAR), WISET 동남권역 울산지역사업단, SERA(Sustainable Environment Renewable Architecture)가 주관하고 환경·엔지니어링 서비스 전문 글로벌 기업인 Tetra Tech가 후원했다.

인문학부 이종은 교수, 브람스 국제 콩쿠르 심사위원 위촉

인문학부 이종은 교수가 제30회 요하네스 브람스 국제 콩쿠르 바이올린 부문 심사위원으로 위촉됐다. 브람스 국제 콩쿠르는 1993년에 시작된 세계적으로 권위 있는 음악 콩쿠르이다. 매년 오스트리아 푀르트샤흐에서 개최되며, 40여 개국에서 400여 명의 연주자가 참가한다. 피아노, 바이올린, 비올라, 첼로, 실내악, 성악 등 6개 분야에서 기량을 겨룬다. 올해 제30회 대회는 9월 1일부터 8일까지 열린다. 이 대회는 작곡가 브람스와 푀르트샤흐의 인연을 기리기 위해 시작됐다. 브람스는 44세에 푀르트샤흐에서 여름을 보내며 교향곡 2번, 바이올린 협주곡 등을 작곡했다. 이 도시는 구스타프 말러와 알반 베르크 같은 작곡가들에게도 영감을 주어 많은 명작을 낳은 곳이다. 브람스 콩쿠르는 참가자 나이 제한이 없다. 10대 음악 천재들이 자주 입상자로 등장한다. 경연은 3차에 걸쳐 진행되며, 2차부터는 공개 경연으로 청중 앞에서 심사 결과를 발표한다. 유럽 각국의 클래식 음악 애호가들이 모여들어 심사위원들과 자신의 평가를 비교하며 경연을 즐긴다. 한국은 이 콩쿠르와 오랜 인연을 이어왔다. 6개 분야에서 꾸준히 상위 입상자를 배출해왔지만, 최근 10년간 바이올린 분야 입상자는 줄었다. 이종은 교수의 심사위원 위촉으로 한국의 젊은 연주자들이 다시 상위 입상자로 등장할 것으로 기대된다. 브람스 국제 콩쿠르 측은 이종은 교수가 유럽 무대에서 활발히 연주하고 있다는 점을 높이 평가했다. 특히 그가 유럽의 저명한 오케스트라들과 협업해 Sony Classic Label로 발매한 차이코프스키, 모차르트, 베토벤, 바르톡 협주곡 음반의 성과도 인정받았다. 이종은 교수는 "세계적인 권위의 콩쿠르여서 개인적으로 매우 명예이면서, 이공계 교양교육 교수가 국제콩쿠르 심사위원으로 선정되는 것은 매우 이례적이고 영예로운 일"라고 소감을 밝혔다. 이어 "국제적으로 많은 참가자들이 함께하는 행사에 UNIST 일원으로서 큰 홍보가 될 것 같다"고 기뻐했다. 한편 이 교수는 12년 동안 UNIST에서 이공계 학생들에게 바이올린 실기교육을 담당하며 예술적 감각과 창의성을 길러왔다. 동시에 활발한 연주 활동과 CD 발매로 대외적으로도 많은 활동을 펼쳐왔다.

[리더스 싱크] 더 건강한 공동체를 위해

필자는 UNIST 인문학부에서 학부생들에게 문학 관련 수업을 가르친다. 현대한국소설, 소설의 시학, 문학과 과학 등 문학 수업과 디지털 인문학 입문, AI와 스토리텔링, 멀티모달 생성의 문학적 이해 등의 문학-공학 융합 수업 등을 가르치는데, 이 중에 단연 인기 있는 수업은 현대한국소설이다. 아무래도 고등학교 때 한 번쯤 들어봤었던 작가와 작품을 다루기 때문이 아닐까. 익숙함이 인기의 비결이다. 그렇다고 학생들이 수학하기에 쉬운 수업은 아니다. 깊은 생각을 요구하는 질문들로 학생들이 곤혹스러워할 때가 많다. 그러나 어려우면서도 즐거운 것이 소설 읽기라고, 학생들은 소설 읽기에 자신의 문제를 투영하여 때로는 창의적으로 때로는 비판적으로 생각을 펼쳐낸다. 한국현대소설에서 학생들이 몰입해서 읽는 소설 중 하나는 이문열의 대표작 <우리들의 일그러진 영웅>(1987)이다. 학교라는 익숙한 공간과 친구들과의 관계 또 그 속에서 전개된 권력에의 굴종과 저항의 서사는 학생들이 한 번쯤 직간접적으로 겪어보았을 내용이기도 하다. 소설은, 서울에서 살던 한병태라는 학생이 지방의 한 초등학교로 전학을 가는 것으로 시작한다. 반에는 이미 엄석대라는 급장이 모든 권력을 쥐고 있다. 그는 타고난 힘과 싸움의 기술 또 처세술로 선생님의 신임을 얻어, 선생님의 대리역으로 학급 미화에서부터 수업준비까지 모든 일에 관여한다. 서울의 민주적 권력 운용에 익숙해져 있던 한병태는 이러한 대리 시스템이 달갑지 않다. 병태는 이런저런 방식으로 석대에게 반항하다가, 결국에는 그에게 굴복한다. 그 뒤에는 석대의 2인자로서 여러 혜택을 얻는다. 동네 맛집 정보, 동네 행사 정보, 또 싸움의 서열에서 높은 자리 차지하기 등등. 그런데 이를 얻기 위해서 병태는 한 가지를 해야 한다. 자신의 미술 재능을 발휘하여 석대 이름으로 그림을 그려주는 것이 그것이다. 병태는 비슷한 방식으로 다른 친구들이 시험 때 한 과목씩을 맡아 부당하게 석대의 점수를 만들어주는 것을 알게 된다. 그러나 석대의 질서 속에서 자신의 능력을 인정받아 오랜만의 안정감에 만족하던 병태는, 새로운 6학년 담임 선생님이 석대의 잘못을 밝히라는 요구에 응하지 않는다. 오히려 석대를 옹호하고 석대의 잘못을 적어낸 반 친구들을 비난한다. 급장의 권력은 이 6학년 담임 선생님에 의해 막을 내린다. 선생님은 학생들을 매로 다스리며 학생들이 잃어버린 것이 무엇인지를 깨닫게 하고 등하굣길에 조를 지어 갑작스러운 석대의 공격에 맞설 수 있게 했다. 우리들의 일그러진 영웅을 해석하며 학생들은 여러 질문을 던졌다. 병태의 저항은 왜 성공하지 못했는가? 6학년 선생님의 훈육이라는, 학생 공동체의 밖에서 온 극단적 처방외에 학생들이 자력으로 문제해결을 할 수 없었나? 이 소설 내 갈등에서 피해를 덜 받은 승자는 누구인가? 이러한 질문의 대답은 석대나 병태, 선생님의 입장 등 여러 각도에서 모색해 볼 수 있다. 그중 간과해서는 안 될 인물은 바로 반 학생들이다. 반 학생들은 석대의 권력에 굴종하여 자발적으로 능력을 내어줌으로써 석대의 시스템을 공고히 한 인물들이다. 또 석대에게서 떨어지는 권력의 콩고물을 받아먹으며 병태의 저항을 좌절시켰던 인물들이다. 한편으로는 담임 선생님이라는 새로운 권력이 등장하자 이에 쉽게 적응하고 석대의 독재를 끝낸 인물들이기도 하다. 반 아이들은 기회주의자들인가? 아니면 새로운 권력과 역사를 만들 수 있는 주체들인가? 이 소설은 몰락하는 병태의 삶의 궤적을 통해 우리에게 경각심을 일깨운다. 정당하지 않은 권력에 굴복하고, 굴종을 통해 나눠 먹은 단물은 내가 디디고 서 있는 공동체를 파괴한다. 승진, 고수익, 능력의 인정 혹은 부당한 권력에 저항하며 누적된 피로감의 해소 굴종을 통해 얻는 유혹은 어디에든 있다. 그러나 그 유혹이 절차와 원칙을 무시하고 나의 상식에 도전한다면 마땅히 멀리해야 할 일이다. 그것이 내가 몸담은 공동체를 건강하고 더 민주적으로 만드는 길이다. <본 칼럼은 2024년 7월 11일 울산신문 “[리더스 싱크] 더 건강한 공동체를 위해"라는 제목으로 실린 것입니다.>

UNIST, 혜진원서 봄날의 햇살처럼 따스한 선율 전해

UNIST(총장 이용훈) 피아노 동아리 ‘피아니스타’가 5월 가정의 달을 맞아 3일(금) 울주군에 위치한 사회복지시설 혜진원에 방문해 따뜻한 음악 선물을 전달했다. 이번 행사는 혜진원에 거주하는 어린이들과 장애인들을 위해 마련됐다. 2001년 문을 연 혜진원은 중증장애인 복지시설로 현재 약 40명의 원생이 거주하고 있다. UNIST 피아노 동아리 ‘피아니스타’는 혜진원 어린이들을 위해 자발적으로 이번 행사를 준비했다. 폭넓은 경험을 제공해주기 위해 클래식곡부터 대중음악까지 다양한 장르의 음악을 선보였다. 사진1. 인문학부 과학기술X예술X사회 연구센터(이하 STARTS센터, 센터장 백경미교수)가 ‘지속가능한 미래공동체’라는 주제로 1월 22일(월)부터 5일간 학술정보관 지관서가에서 전시를 열었다. 전시는 겨울계절학기에 인문학부에 개설된 ‘예술특강’(지도: 백경미)과 ‘문명의 발전’ (지도: 김효민) 강좌를 수강한 학생 47명의 팀프로젝트 결과물을 공유하기 위해 마련된 자리다. 총 13개의 팀프로젝트가 관람객을 맞았다. 백경미 센터장은 “수강생들 뿐만아니라 미래 과학기술계의 ‘리더’들에게 지속 가능한 미래공동체에 대해 함께 고민할 수 있는 기회를 마련해 본다는 취지에서 기획된 전시”라며 “팀 프로젝트에 관심과 열의를 가지고 참여해준 학생들에게도 고맙다”고 전했다. 이번 전시에서 예술특강 수강 학생들은 외고산 옹기마을을 활성화시키기 위한 다양한 방안을 포스터에 담아 선보였다. 옹기의 물리적 특성, 문화적 특수성 등에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 키즈산업과 연계해 잠재적 부가가치를 높이는 방안, 옹기의 활용범위를 확장하는 공간 연출 방안 등 의미 있는 대안들을 제시했다. 학생들이 외고산 옹기마을을 방문해 만든 점토타일도 함께 전시됐다. 학생들은 구체적인 주제를 선정하기에 앞서 울주군 온양에 위치한 외고산 옹기마을을 직접 방문해 현장의 이야기를 듣기도 했다. ‘예술특강’은 초연결사회의 문화 균질화 현상, 사회적 관심이 필요한 인류문화다양성, 그 근간이 되는 지역기반 전통문화유산의 지속가능성을 주제로 한 프로젝트 기반 수업이다. 기후변화와 같은 ‘측정 척도를 확립하기 어려운 자연적 현상’을 문명이 어떤 방식으로 개입해 측정할 것 인지에대한 논의도 전시됐다. 문명의 발전 수강생들은 ‘사실에 대한 객관적 측정기준’에 대한 역사적, 사회학적 논의를 바탕으로 현대 사회의 두 난제인 ‘기화 변화 대응’과 ‘인간의 의식이해’를 위한 새롭고 통합적인 접근법을 제안했다. 탄소포집기술, 모델링, 합성연료, 전생애주기평가, 신체와 감정의 관계에 대한 학생들의 구체적인 논의가 포함됐다. 문명의 발전은 16-17세기 이후 근대적 합리성의 형성과 변형, 자기성찰 과정을 주제로 한 프로젝트 기반 수업이다. 최영수 UNIST 발전재단이사(삼두종합기술대표), 홍성욱 서울대학교 교수, 조재원 UNIST 교수, 허진규 옹기장, 울주군 관광과 관계자 등이 전시장을 찾아 학생들을 격려했다. 전시장을 둘러본 최영수 이사는 “학생들과 프로젝트를 지도한 백경미 교수의 열정과 노력에 감동했다”라고 소감을 전했다. 한편, STARTS센터에는 현재 예술･인문사회･공학분야로 구성된 7명의 교내외 연구자들이 소속되어 활동 중이다. 지난해부터 학술세미나 시리즈를 통해 ‘지속 가능한 미래공동체’를 위한 과학기술, 예술, 교육 학제간의 논의를 이어오고 있다. 물을 주제로 한 융복합연구활동과 이와 연계한 교육플랫폼을 위한 연구동아리, 프로젝트기반 강좌 개설 등 다양한 탐구형 융합교육활동을 추진하고 있다.

Reflections upon Morality: A New Publication by Professor Seungbae Park

Professor Seungbae Park of the School of Liberal Arts at UNIST has published a new introductory ethics textbook, titled 《Reflections upon Morality》, which aimed at undergraduate students in science, engineering, and business. Published by Korean Studies Information Co., Ltd., the book responds to the growing need for ethical literacy in technology-driven fields. Written entirely in English, it reflects UNIST’s English-language curriculum and seeks to provide technical students with a stronger foundation in moral reasoning. Unlike conventional ethics textbooks, 《Reflections upon Morality》 combines established philosophical frameworks with new theoretical approaches. In addition to examining major traditions such as utilitarianism and Kantian ethics, Professor Park introduces two original normative theories—probabilistic utilitarianism and unanimitism. The book also explores the relationship between ethics and scientific disciplines such as psychology and biology, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of moral inquiry. The text addresses ethical dilemmas that scientists and engineers increasingly encounter in practice. Topics include the moral justification of gene-editing technologies, the design of ethical decision-making systems for autonomous vehicles, professional responsibility in the face of unjust directives, the societal impact of artificial intelligence, and the ethics of developing lethal autonomous weapons. Beyond technology, the book expands into media, business, and international ethics. It considers whether biased reporting can be justified under press freedom, what responsibilities individuals hold as media consumers, how corporate leadership and compensation can be ethically assessed, and how nations should evaluate power, conflict, and war in the international arena. Professor Park noted, "I hope this book provides students in technical fields with a meaningful opportunity to deepen their understanding of ethical issues." By integrating philosophical analysis with contemporary case studies, 《Reflections upon Morality》 aims to equip future scientists, engineers, and business leaders with the critical tools needed to make responsible decisions in an increasingly complex world.

UNIST Held 2026 Freshman English Camp to Support Academic Transition

UNIST School of Liberal Arts successfully completed its 2026 Freshmen English Camp, a five-day, on-campus program designed to strengthen English proficiency and support the academic transition of prospective freshmen. Held from January 20 to 30, the camp marked UNIST's first fully in-person English program since the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 111 prospective freshmen and current students participated, engaging in intensive language training and campus-based learning activities, led by native-speaking faculty. The curriculum focused on practical skills required for English-medium courses, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Daily sessions ran from morning through early evening, followed by TA-led activities that provided academic guidance and peer support. After operating online since 2021, the camp returned to a residential format in 2026 to improve learning outcomes and student engagement. The renewed format allowed participants to experience campus life while building confidence in using English in academic settings. Participants who completed the program met the requirements for introductory English courses and reported feeling better prepared for university lectures. Professor Jeongyeon Kim of the School of Liberal Arts, coordinator of UNIST Language Education Program, commented, "The active participation by students made this program especially meaningful. We hope this experience will help them approach their studies and campus life with greater confidence."

Reflections upon Religion: A New Publication by Professor Seungbae Park

Professor Seungbae Park of the School of Liberal Arts at UNIST has published a new introductory book on the philosophy of religion, titled 《Reflections upon Religion》, released on January 2 by the Korean Studies Information Co., Ltd. Unlike conventional introductions to the field, the book is specifically designed for students and readers with backgrounds in science and engineering. It approaches classical and contemporary philosophical questions through the lens of modern scientific theories, offering an accessible yet rigorous framework for readers more familiar with scientific reasoning than theological discourse. Drawing on fields, such as quantum field theory, cosmology, evolutionary theory, and cognitive science, the book examines enduring philosophical questions including the existence and attributes of God, the origin of the universe, life after death, and the relationship between science and religion. For example, it explores whether consciousness can persist after bodily death in connection with quantum field theory, and revisits questions of divine creation in light of the Big Bang theory, conformal cyclic cosmology, relativity, and the laws of thermodynamics. The book also incorporates perspectives from the cognitive science of religion to explain religious phenomena, such as ritual, proselytization, religious euphoria, moral behavior, and religious conflict. Rather than presuming religious belief, it critically examines how cognitive mechanisms and evolutionary processes may shape both belief and disbelief, encouraging readers to assess religious claims with analytical clarity. 《Reflections upon Religion》 is based on Professor Park's extensive teaching experience at the University of Maryland and UNIST, where all courses are conducted in English and discussion-based learning is actively encouraged. Accordingly, the book is written in English and structured around carefully selected topics well suited to seminar-style classes, inviting critical engagement rather than doctrinal instruction. Professor Park specializes in the philosophy of science and philosophy of religion and has published more than 80 articles in internationally recognized SCI-level journals. He has also authored two scholarly monographs published by Springer—《Embracing Scientific Realism》 in 2022 and 《Induction, Science, and Morality》 in 2025—becoming the first Korean scholar in the field of philosophy of science to publish specialized volumes with such a prestigious publisher.

Professor Seungbae Park of the School of Liberal Arts at UNIST has published a significant new book titled, 《Induction, Science, and Morality》with Springer, one of the world’s leading academic publishers. Notably, Professor Park is the only Korean researcher to have authored two specialized monographs in the field of philosophy of science published by Springer, marking a milestone for Korean scholars in this discipline. This book was written at the invitation of Professor Otávio Bueno, the editor-in-chief of Springer's Synthese and the Synthese Library book series, and offers critical insights into one of the most enduring problems in philosophy: Hume's problem of induction. In the volume, Professor Park critically examines the challenge posed by David Hume—that induction cannot be justified—and explores alternative approaches to defending scientific realism against skeptics. Moving beyond traditional debates, the book develops “counter-inductions” to counter pessimistic views and advocates a realist perspective on scientific progress. Furthermore, Professor Park enriches philosophical discourse by introducing a novel metaethical framework called 'Moral Functionalism.' While science primarily deals with factual propositions, ethics concerns normative imperatives—what ought to be done. The book sheds light on the fundamental nature of moral statements through the lens of moral functionalism, offering fresh perspectives on moral philosophy. Since joining UNIST in 2009, Professor Park has published over 80 papers in top-tier scholarly journals and released his first book,《Embracing Scientific Realism》, in 2022. He expressed his enthusiasm about his latest work, stating, "It is deeply rewarding to see my research cited by graduate students at overseas institutions, enabling them to complete their doctoral studies." He further added, "At UNIST, where all coursework is conducted in English, every discussion with students sparks new insights into my research."

Reflections upon Science: A New Publication by Professor Seungbae Park

Professor Seungbae Park from the School of Liberal Arts (SLA) at UNIST has published the introductory book on the philosophy of science titled《Reflections upon Science》. This book was written based on Professor Park's teaching experiences at the University of Arizona and UNIST. Professor Park's classes differ from traditional rote learning. They emphasize critical thinking and active discussion, encouraging students to engage deeply with key issues in the philosophy of science. In this regard, the content of the book aligns closely with topics covered in his lectures. Key questions explored in the book include: "How Do Scientists Confirm Hypotheses?," "What Are the Conditions for Scientific Explanation and Prediction?," and "What Is the Difference between Science and Religion?" The book also covers topics in biology, physics, and the philosophy of mathematics, explaining the strange phenomena of quantum mechanics, such as superposition, measurement, and quantum entanglement, in a way that even high school students can understand. Renowned scholars' perspectives, including those of Popper, Kuhn, Hempel, Bohr, and Einstein, are discussed, with Professor Park providing critiques and alternatives to their theories. He believes that demonstrating concepts is the most effective teaching method for fostering critical thinking among students. UNIST is the only institute in Korea that conducts all classes 100% in English. While Professor Park's book is published in English, it has been composed in a way that makes it accessible to general readers. This book can be used not only in universities but also as a textbook in science philosophy courses at gifted schools. Since joining UNIST in 2009, Professor Park has published over 80 SCI-level papers. In 2022, he also released a specialized book on the philosophy of science titled Embracing Scientific Realism with Springer, one of the world’s top three academic publishers. He is the first in South Korea's philosophy of science field to publish a specialized book with such a prestigious publisher.

UNIST and Gaudí World Foundation Sign MOU for 'Sustainable Urban Development'

The School of Liberal Arts (SLA) at UNIST convened the 'Global Origination Workshop on Science and Design Integration to Make Coastal Cities More Attractive' in collaboration with the Gaudí World Foundation (GWF) on January 15, 2025. The workshop attracted a diverse group of experts and students, focusing on the nature-inspired design approach championed by Antoni Gaudí. Key objectives of the workshop included igniting creative thinking, inspiring sustainable solutions by integrating principles of nature, design, and humanism, and exploring the relevance of Gaudí's origination methodology in addressing modern challenges in science and design. Through expert lectures, hands-on activities, and networking opportunities, participants delved into Gaudí's origination methodology and examined its connection to biomimicry, biophilia, and cutting-edge technology. The event commenced with a welcoming address by Professor Hyomin Kim from the School of Liberal Arts at UNIST. Keynote speeches were delivered by GWF Creative Director Sofya Abramchuk and Professor Sungwook Hong from Seoul National University. Director Abramchuk presented on 'Idea Generation Using Gaudí Methodology,' while Professor Hong explored the 'Convergence of Science, Technology, and Art.' Both emphasized the significance of creative thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants were encouraged to devise solutions to modern city challenges, drawing inspiration from Gaudí's principles of Origin, Humanism, and Sustainability. They examined the masterpiece Colonia Güell to experience a case study in the fusion of natural and human-centered design. This allowed participants to visualize how Gaudí's design principles could be applied to real-world challenges. The workshop fostered collaboration among the fields of architecture, design, and science and technology, allowing participants to explore innovative ideas for marine city development while enhancing their problem-solving abilities through nature-friendly design. This collaboration culminated in the presentation of a practical plan for sustainable urban development. Following the workshop, UNIST and the GWF signed a business agreement to advance creative convergence in education and research. This agreement focuses on joint research and development initiatives and strengthens networking opportunities with industries and local communities, marking a significant step towards developing design solutions that integrate science, technology, and art while promoting global educational cooperation. President Chong Rae Park stated, "By converging science and art, we will create an innovative educational model and unique research outcomes for 'Pioneer UNIST.' This agreement is meaningful not only for advancing cutting-edge science and technology but also for fostering a transformative innovative culture within universities." The workshop was organized by the UNIST Convergence Science Research Center (CISAR), the WISET Southeast Ulsan Regional Project Group, and SERA (Sustainable Environment Renewable Architecture), and was sponsored by Tetra Tech, a global leader in environmental and engineering services.

UNIST Honors Twelve Outstanding Faculty Members at the Annual Awards Ceremony!

On April 8, UNIST held its annual 'Outstanding Faculty Awards' ceremony to shine a spotlight on the exceptional accomplishments of its faculty members throughout the 2023 academic year. The 2023 Outstanding Faculty Awards Ceremony took place on Monday, April 8, 2024. The Outstanding Faculty Awards aim to acknowledge faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in research, industry-academic cooperation, and education. Each year, candidates in various categories are carefully selected for their notable contributions to the university and their respective fields. This year, a total of twelve faculty members—four in scholarly work, three in research, three in education, and two in industry-academic cooperation—were recognized for their dedication to their students and the outstanding expertise they bring to their fields. In the education category, Professor Min Sup Hur from the Department of Physics received the Grand Prize for his expertise in plasma physics. The Excellence Award in education was bestowed upon Professor Soon-Yong Kwon from the Graduate School of Semiconductor Materials and Devices Engineering, Professor Kyoseung Sim in the Department of Chemistry, and Professor Kyungdon Joo in the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence (AI). For the Research category, Professor Seok Ju Kang in the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering was recognized for his leadership in the UNIST secondary battery project. Excellence Awards in Research were granted to Professor Ja Young Ryu from the Department of Chemistry and Professor Ji Young Park from the Department of Life Sciences. Professor Min Sup (Department of Physics) has been presented with the Grand Prize in the Education sector. Professor JongEun Lee from the School of Liberal Arts received the grand prize in the Education category for her contributions to the innovation of liberal arts subjects through guidance of UNISTra and the implementation of the UNIST Performing Arts Festival. Additionally, Professor Oh Hoon Kwon in the Department of Chemistry and Professor Kyungho Lee in the Department of Design were honored with the Excellence Award for their dedication to enhancing basic subject education and creating a conducive learning environment for students, respectively. In the Industry-Academia Cooperation category, Professor Jiseok Lee in the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering and Professor Sunghoon Lim from the Department of Industrial Engineering received the Excellence Award for their roles in technology commercialization and problem-solving through industry collaboration, respectively. President Lee delivered a congratulatory message to the award recipients at the ceremony. President Lee expressed his gratitude, stating, "UNIST's success in 2023 is a testament to the exceptional achievements of our dedicated faculty members." STARTS Center Exhibition Explores Sustainable Future Community through Science, Technology, Art, and Society!

The Center for Science, Technology, ARTs in Society (STARTS Center) within the School of Liberal Arts at UNIST held a five-day exhibition under the theme of "Sustainable Future Community" at Jigwanseoga, located on the 1F of UNIST Library on January 22, 2024. The exhibition aimed to showcase the outcomes of team projects by 47 students who participated in the "Topics in Arts (Advisor: Professor Kyong-Mi Paek)" and "Evolution of Civilization (Advisor: Professor Hyomin Kim)" courses offered by the School of Liberal Arts at UNIST during the winter semester. The projects explored the potential of Oegosan Onggi Village and proposed innovative approaches to address climate change. The exhibition aimed to inspire students and future leaders to contemplate a sustainable future community and foster interdisciplinary discussions on science, technology, art, and education. During the exhibition, a total of 13 team projects were presented. Professor Kyong-Mi Paek, the Director of STARTS Center, stated, "The exhibition was curated to provide not only students but also future leaders of the science and technology community with an opportunity to contemplate a sustainable future community together." The exhibition featured diverse approaches to activate the Oegosan Onggi Village, presented by students who took the special lecture on art. Through an understanding of Onggi's physical characteristics and cultural uniqueness, the projects suggested meaningful alternatives such as enhancing the potential added value through connections with the kids industry and creating spaces to expand the utilization of Onggi. Before selecting specific topics, students visited the Oegosan Onggi Village located in Onyang, Ulju-gun, and listened to the narratives of the site. The "Special Lecture on Art" is a project-based course with a focus on cultural homogenization in a hyperconnected society, the importance of human cultural diversity, and the sustainability of region-based traditional cultural heritage. The exhibition also showcased discussions on how civilization can address "natural phenomena that are difficult to measure," such as climate change. Students from the Development of Civilization course proposed a new integrated approach to tackle climate change and comprehend human consciousness - two challenges in modern society. The proposals were based on historical and sociological discussions surrounding "objective measurement criteria for facts." The students' discussions included in-depth analysis of carbon capture technology, modeling, synthetic fuel, life cycle evaluation, and the relationship between the body and emotions. The Development of Civilization course focuses on the formation and transformation of modern rationality and the process of self-reflection after the 16th and 17th centuries. During the exhibition, Young Soo Choi, Director of the UNIST Development Foundation (CEO of Samdu General Technology Co., Ltd.), Professor Sung Wook Hong from Seoul National University, Professor Jae Won Cho from UNIST, Heo Jin-kyu, Onggijang, and officials from the Ulju-gun Tourism Division visited the exhibition hall to encourage the students. Director Choi Young-soo, who toured the exhibition hall, expressed, "I was deeply moved by the passion and dedication of Professor Baek, who guided the students and the projects." Currently, the STARTS Center comprises seven internal and external researchers from the fields of arts, humanities, society, and engineering. Since last year, the center has been engaged in interdisciplinary discussions on science, technology, art, and education for a 'sustainable future community' through an academic seminar series. Various inquiry-based convergence education activities are being promoted, including water-themed convergence research, research clubs focusing on educational platforms, and project-based courses.

UNIST Hosts International Colloquium on Liberal Arts Education in the Era of AI

On November 3, UNIST announced that the School of Liberal Arts Research Center successfully organized an international colloquium on the theme of "Liberal Arts Education in the Era of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Challenges and Opportunities." Esteemed education experts from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the Gangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), and the University of Ulsan attended the event. The purpose of the colloquium was to engage in discussions revolving around ethics, policies, and the mission of liberal arts education in a technologically advanced society. Jinsook Choi, Head of the School of Liberal Arts (SLA) at UNIST, expressed the challenges faced by the University of Science and Technology in recruiting and nurturing talents due to a decline in the school-age population and the prevalence of the "university craze." She further emphasized the crisis brought about by the emergence of generative AI and emphasized the need to view it as an opportunity to cultivate next-generation talent. Vice President Jaiyong Lee of UNIST delivered a keynote speech, emphasizing the importance of equipping college students with new competencies and adaptable thinking to keep pace with the rapidly evolving technologies and prepare for an uncertain future labor market. He urged universities to actively promote future-oriented knowledge and skills through liberal arts education. The speakers at the colloquium agreed that the advent of generative AI technology poses a challenge to the fundamental role of liberal arts education, but also presents an opportunity to foster students' creativity, critical thinking, and ethical reasoning abilities. During a roundtable discussion, involving faculty members from the science and engineering departments at UNIST, participants shared their insights on university education as a whole. They acknowledged the impact of advanced technologies, such as the commercialization of generative AI, on the changing landscape of higher education. The discussion revolved around defining the educational direction and purpose that universities should pursue in order to nurture next-generation talent. It was unanimously agreed that expanding the horizons of science and engineering students through liberal arts education is a pressing need. The UNIST Performing Arts Festival (UPAF): A Celebration of Creativity and Talents

The eagerly anticipated UNIST Performing Arts Festival (UPAF) is set to captivate audiences, as it takes place on campus from July 25 to 28, 2023. This extraordinary event will bring together students specializing in science and technology from various universities in the Ulsan region, who had given the guidance of professional classical musicians and perform their results they have honed so far. The festival aims to showcase their remarkable creativity and talents through various captivating performances. With an array of engaging acts spanning music, dance, theater, and more, UPAF promises to be a celebration of artistic expression that will leave attendees inspired and entertained. The festival will feature two captivating performances that will be open for all citizens to enjoy free of charge. The UNIST Performing Arts Festival (UPAF) will take place throughout the campus from July 25 to 28, 2023. The festival commences with a special performance, entitled "Mid-summer Night Concert." Esteemed violinist Professor JongEun Lee, cellist Hoonsun Chae, and pianis Gunyoung Hwang will come together as a piano trio to deliver an enchanting musical experience. Professor Lee is a graduate of Juilliard College of Music in New York, while both Hoonsun Chae and Gunyoung Hwang completed their studies at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin in Berlin, Germany. These accomplished musicians have achieved numerous accolades in domestic and international competitions while actively performing worldwide. Additionally, media art performances exploring the convergence of science, technology, and art will be presented. Through real-time interpretation by artificial intelligence combined with media art elements, this unique performance promises an immersive audiovisual experience prepared by a team, led by Professor Kyungho Lee in the Department of Design at UNIST. A total of 27 students will participate in this enriching experience, including 22 students from UNIST, KAIST, POSTECH, and GIST, along with 5 talented students from the School of Music within the College of Arts at University of Ulsan. "This event aims to foster exchanges among future science and technology talents while promoting art-science-technology convergence and fostering harmony between UNIST and Ulsan," noted Dean Jinsook Choi from the School of Liberal Arts at UNIST who hosted this festival. Meanwhile, the UNIST Performing Arts Festival (UPAF) has been organized by the School of Liberal Arts and the Department of Design at UNIST through the support from the College of Engineering at UNIST.
